Word from our Father
Jesus Himself repeatedly stated
that His actions demonstrated the will of the Father. For instance, Jesus said
this about His actions and teaching in relationship with His Father.
John 8:18b-19 ---- "... I do
nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.
And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the
things that are pleasing to Him."
From this short passage, these
three important elements are revealed:
1. Actions: Christ did not
initiate the things that He did. This certainly includes healing and miracles.
These events are expressions of the Father's will. Therefore, to learn about
the Father's will in healing, believers need to carefully observe the actions
of the LORD Jesus Christ as He dealt with sickness and disease.
2. Teaching: Christ only spoke
those things that the Father taught Him. This includes the teaching Christ did
about healing. To learn about the Father's perfect will in healing, believers
must study what Christ said about healing. Modern theology often ignores or
reduce what Christ says about healing or what He says to people before and
after they have been healed.
3. How to please the Father.
Christ only did things that pleased the Father. Therefore, the various healings
and miracles, were pleasing to the Father. In order to learn what pleased the
Father in matters of healing, believers need to study the teaching of Christ
and His actions in these matters. Furthermore, believers need to recognize what
Christ did not say and did not do in these matters. Teaching that ideas,
attitudes, and actions that do not find their basis in Christ Himself, will not
please the Father.
John 5:19-20 ---- Jesus therefore
answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can
do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for
whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. For
the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that he Himself is doing;
and greater works than these will He show Him, that you may marvel."
1. The Son can do nothing of
Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing....
Christ always revealed the
Father's will in His actions, attitudes and teaching. Christ had revelation of
what the Father wanted, and He lived out that revelation.
2. For whatever the Father does,
these things the Son also does in like manner.
The truth of the ongoing intimacy
between Christ and the Father is apparent in this passage. However, some have
misunderstood this passage to think that if they do not see something that the
Father is doing when a sick person is present that they cannot heal them. This
is a serious misunderstanding of Christ's healing ministry. Christ had
previously seen the Father healing the sick through Him. He had already
understood the Father's will in healing the sick. He had a revelation of the
Father's will in the matter. He understood this to be the ongoing will of the Father.
As Christ acted upon what He had
previously seen the Father doing, He received more specifics from the Father on
these matters for specific people. However, most people were healed in Christ's
ministry in a relatively normal way without Him receiving a specific unusual
revelation. Where a special revelation was received, the Gospel writers record
it.
3. For the Father loves the Son,
and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing. The intimacy of the
relationship between the Father and the Son is revealed in many verses. Christ
then demonstrated that he understood the Father's heart in His healing and
delivering the afflicted around Him.
4. And greater works than these
will He show Him, that you may marvel. The greater works of Christ were His expression
of the heart of the Father towards people. Christ's revelation of the Father
finds many other expressions in John's Gospel. Christ said in John 6:38 ---
"For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of
Him (the Father) who sent Me."
In other words, should one wish
to know the will of God the Father concerning a matter, his first observations
should concern the life and words of Jesus Christ. Christ expressed this so
often that it is amazing it is so often overlooked or seen as unimportant.
He said in John 5:30 --- "I
can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is
just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me."
Jesus gave us instruction in Luke
9:1-2 --- Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and
authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. And he sent them to preach the
Mark 6:12-13 --- And they went
out, and preached that men should repent. And they cast out many devils, and
anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
When your authority or your
validity are questioned, rejoice! Refuse to retreat - even for a moment.
Can you not see that the whole
strategy behind the enemy's challenge is to convince you to question your
commission and to retreat? Child, "retreat" and "defeat"
are alien to heavenly policy! They are words foreign to Kingdom language.
Great conquests are often
followed by great challenges. Was this not the case even in the ministry of
Jesus? Indeed it was. His deeds and His words were often followed by the
question, "By what authority does He do these things?" Yes, I knew
you would recognize the familiar ring of those words. Be encouraged! Just think
of it all as being a "part of the package." I do.
