Vashti’s Banquet (The Christian’s Refusal to Enter Tabernacles)

David Weber

Sept 2006

It is true that many Christians today read their Bibles on a very regular basis, yet unfortunately many of them never hear what the Spirit has to say through what they are reading. Many of these same Christians seem to have a great breadth of intellectual knowledge about the Scriptures, yet they know very little about the true nature, character, and plans of the God of whom, and by whom, the Scriptures are written.

The Word of the Lord to these today is the same as it was to the religious intellectuals of yesterday;

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about me; and you are unwilling to come to me so that you may have life.” (John 5:39- 40)

What is translated here as “eternal life” is more accurately translated as “the life of the age,” which is referring to the fullness of life that could be had at that particular time in God’s plan for His creation man. The application for the Pharisees to whom Jesus was speaking was that they were being called out of a Passover age and a Passover relationship to God and into a Pentecostal one. As you know, almost all but a small remnant refused Jesus’ invitation. The application for us today is that many are now being called from a Pentecostal age and a Pentecostal relationship to God and into a Tabernacles one, yet just as the Jews of yesterday rejected Jesus’ invitation, so are most Christians today refusing the Spirit’s invitation to come into Tabernacles.

With the hope of bringing some more light to this subject, let me share with you here just a few things from the book of Esther, for in it we find a prophetic picture of the carnal Church’s refusal to enter into the Feast of Tabernacles. You may want to read chapters one and two of Esther when you finish this e-mail, for I do not have the time or space to retype all of the Scripture verses or reveal all of the symbols that are found in those chapters, yet I will share with you a few types that may help you see what the Spirit is showing us about this in this day.

The book of Esther opens to us with an introduction to a King named Ahasuerus, whose name means, “The Lion King.” This helps identify him to us (in type) as the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Lord Jesus Christ. The citadel where King Ahasuerus’ royal throne was established was in a place called “Susa” or “Shushan," which means, “purity of word and thought.” This describes for us just whom this King truly reigns over ... those who are pure in their thoughts and in their words, or stated in another way ... those who have put on the mind of Christ.

Chapter one of Esther then goes on to describe a feast or banquet that was thrown by the King for all in the palace; this was a time in which he would display the riches of his glory and the splendor of his majesty. This banquet is actually a prophetic shadow of the Feast of Tabernacles. This was quite a party, for it went on for 180 days and then was extended for another seven, totaling 187 days in its duration. This number is very significant, for it is a prophetic key which unlocks for us the prophetic meaning of the King’s feast. If we count 187 days from the 1st of Aviv (the first of the year on the biblical calendar) we come out exactly on the Day of Atonement. This is a day that falls on the tenth of the seventh month. Beloved, the feast that is in the seventh month is the Feast of Tabernacles.

There is great revelation to be gained in this chapter by anyone who will meditate upon the items and the people described in it. I can't go through them all at this time, but I will share with you a few things that may help those of you who may want to study a little further.

Esther herself is a type of the Melchizedek priesthood, she had no father or mother, and she fasted from all of her own ways... She only did as her overseer (the Holy Spirit) chose for her. Vashti on the other hand is a type of the carnal Church who does whatsoever they will, even refusing the King’s invitation to come to the Feast of Tabernacles.

Esther was willing to be put through the process of beautification so that she could come before the King; this entailed six months of treatment with the oil of myrrh, a burial spice - speaking of death to the self-life through suffering and pain, and this for the purpose of taking away the filth of religious and traditional mindsets. Then she was put through six months of treatment with “beautiful spices” which comes only from basking in the presence of the Lord ... This infuses her with the fragrance of Christ!!!

Vashti on the other hand, while refusing the King’s invitation to come to his feast, was giving her own “banquet for the women." Quite often in the scriptures “women” are used as types of the “soul” and not the “spirit.” What this is saying is that Vashti was so busy having her own soulish banquet that she did not want to be bothered by an invitation to another yet more spiritual feast. This is also what the carnal Church is doing today. They have little experience with the deeper spiritual life, and they do not desire to completely surrender their own will so that they may be processed by the Lord and enabled to enter into that deeper spiritual life (the life of the age) ... so they continue on as they always have with their religious rituals and soulish feasts, and by doing so they refuse the King’s invitation to come to His banquet ... The Feast of Tabernacles.

In light of this, take another look at Jesus’ words to the “Vashtis” of His day, so that we may also hear what He is saying to the “Vashtis” of today.

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life (the life of the age); it is these that testify about me; and you are unwilling to come to me so that you may have life [The Life].” (John 5:39- 40)

Beloved, if you are receiving an invitation to the King’s banquet, the Feast of Tabernacles, it would be wise of you to drop whatever it is that you are doing, get yourself ready, and GO! For a royal edict was issued in King Ahasuerus’ Court for Vashti’s estate to be given to another because of her disobedience to his command. The Scriptures reveal a similar decree to be issued in the Kingdom of God for those who refuse to come to the Feast of Tabernacles. Here it is:

“But the Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray, who went astray from me after their idols (their own ways), shall bear the punishment for their iniquity. Yet they shall be ministers in My sanctuary, having oversight at the gates of the house and ministering in the house; they shall slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifices for the people, and they shall stand and minister to them. Because they ministered to them before their idols and became a stumbling block of iniquity to the house of Israel, therefore I have sworn against them (a decree or edict),” declares the Lord God, “that they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity. And they shall not come near to me to serve as a priest to me, nor come near to any of My holy things, to the things that are most holy; but they will bear the shame of their abominations which they have committed. (Ezekiel 44 10-13)

That sounds quite similar to Vashti's punishment does it not?

May you all be blessed with eyes that see and ears that hear what God is saying in this awesome day!
