COMMANDMENTS. COMMANDMENTS!!!6th December 2006.
Our God set the standard:
'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart [spirit], and with all thy soul ['breathing' life], and with all thy might[of mind and body].' Deu 6:5
'Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart [spirit], and with all thy soul ['breathing' life], and with all thy mind [deep thoughts]. This is the first and greatest commandment'. Matt 22:37-38
'And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart [spirit], and with all thy soul['breathing' life], and with all thy mind [deep thoughts], and with all thy strength [body] : this is the first commandment'. Mark 12:30
'Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.' Lev 19:18
'And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself'. Matt 22:39
'And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself'. Mark 12:31
'On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets'. Matt 22:40
'There is none other commandment greater than these.' Mark
the message is clear - these two are the major and most important
headings of the page. They give the overall message, the standard. All
the others are subheadings that give the small print, the details.
What then do all these laws and statutes in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy mean?
Our Lord gave His standard and then peered into the heart of man,
giving him a guide to follow that standard - because of the weakness of
'Moses because of the hardness of your hearts
suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not
so.' Matt 19:8
'For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.' Mark 10:5
when He looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the
hardness of their hearts, He saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine
hand...' Mark 3:5
Whose hearts were hard? The controllers of the law were the ones that had hard hearts! Not the people. They should
have ruled with the Love and Heart of God but instead they 'nit-picked'.
'What then' these 2 laws?
Why tell a soldier that if he sees a beautiful woman in the city that is captured to not touch
her for a month? Deu 21:13. Because God sees the hearts of soldiers and
sees the rapes and atrocities they can commit in uniform! And we see
that everyday in the news (But I think by one month of waiting, all passion should have died down!).
Why tell a farmer not to go over his
field again to get the crops he has missed, so the poor can have that?
Lev 23:22. Because God sees the greed in the hearts of men as the poor
and strangers are forgotten and left to die.
Even today the
richest 2% own half the world; the richest 10% own 85% of the world;
the poorest 50% own only 1% of the world's assets. See
a child in the womb 'a neighbour'? Is the 'choice' argument really
valid if one is a 'neighbour' that lives in a womb and is not 'owned'
by the womb? Who owns the child anyway? Not the parents, not the state. God does. The
parents' duty is to take care of their own bodies so that the child has
the best chance in that temporary 'home' of the womb. Is that why Exo
21:22 reads like that? A sin against a neighbour?
Ah brothers and sisters.
As we are loving the Lord our God: we will not set anything uppermost (idols) in our minds but Him alone. Exo 20:4
As we are loving the Lord our God: we will not take the Lord's name/nature for granted (in vain). Exo 20:7. We will not 'use' Him as a great big 'Santa Claus' again.
As we are loving the Lord our God: we will remember His rest- Jesus Christ - and live holy unto Him.
As we are loving the Lord our God: we will honour our parents - those who brought us up in this life.
we are loving our neighbours as ourselves: we will not kill them, steal
from them, sleep with them, covet their lives, bear false witness
Our Lord is seeking 'a heart of worship'. And 'a heart of worship' He will get. For He is standing at your door knocking.
He will not leave till you invite Him in!
Stay blessed in Him,
